Thanksgiving 2018

Thanksgiving 2018

Oof… Is Thanksgiving old news by now?

Very behind on this recap as I decided it was high time to update my portfolio along with working on some other projects.

It is amazing to think that it’s been almost 4 years since I’ve been out of college and to see how my work/style has improved and changed over time.

What hasn’t changed is my love for Thanksgiving and the particular foods that I always bring.

Thanksgiving 2017

Thanksgiving 2017

This is the third year I've blogged about my Thanksgiving and my family undoubtedly knows the routine now.

The running joke was to make "everything pretty" because they knew I would be taking pictures. It made me think about food photography as a whole and stylized shots vs. lifestyle shots and the need to capture a certain aesthetic because it has to look good. I do care about how things look in terms of having a visual eye to highlight the best parts of what I am trying to capture but I don't want to do it at the expense of people feeling uncomfortable or self conscious. And sometimes, I am just plain immersed in what I am doing that I forget.

Pear & Caramel Pie

Pear & Caramel Pie

I've found a new pie that just *might* be my new favorite.

For a long, long time, I have loved Lemon Meringue Pie. And in most recent years, this yuzu variation, which is essentially the same thing but with a different citrus. It's the dessert I would make almost every time I would visit Popo. I would crave that pucker-y custard filling and fluffy meringue topping. I'm not sure what I did the last time I made it, or maybe it really is best eaten the same day it comes out of the oven but I have found that I am not really fond of leftover Lemon Meringue Pie anymore. Maybe I am not blind baking the crust enough or maybe I should try brushing the bottom with egg white? Has anyone tried this? But for whatever reason, the fact that the crust gets soggy/syrup-soaked in Lemon Meringue Pie no longer appeals to me. I dread it and in general I really love leftovers and have loved leftover Lemon Meringue Pie in the past. So, I have found that I don't gravitate towards Lemon Meringue Pie as much as I used to unless I know I will be sharing it with enough people to eat it all on the same day.

Thanksgiving 2016

Thanksgiving 2016

I can't believe that Thanksgiving came and went like that.

In October, Kristen and I had called Popo, excitedly telling her what we were planning on bringing—Cranberry Apple Ginger Pie and Pumpkin Cinnamon Bread for me, Butternut Squash Polenta and later a Classic Pumpkin Pie for Kristen.

But, between then and Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday crept up on me and before I knew it, it was time to start gathering ingredients and prepping food. Let's just say that my Wednesday before and Thursday morning were not complete without their own set of disasters. Basically, this happened but more on that when I write my Recipe Mishaps of 2016. Remember 2015's

Thanksgiving 2015

Thanksgiving 2015

Another Thanksgiving is over and done and it makes me just the tiniest bit sad that it's another 360-something days until the next one.

My contribution was an apple pie, which turned out  beautifully. I always like coming a bit early with Popo to help out with the stuffing. It's quiet and it's exciting to partake in the favorite dish for almost everyone at Thanksgiving. There are a lot of "secrets" to the stuffing. But, not so secret now since I'm telling you. It starts off with this wok which is huge, decades old which probably means it has some great flavor that no other pan can replicate. In goes lots of bacon, onions, celery, parsley, sausage, rice, butter, cornbread, butter, bread, butter, wine, Worcestershire sauce, poultry seasoning, pepper and dried cranberries. Did I mention butter? It's all very much an "exact" recipe that has a lot of very bad for you things that makes it taste sooo good.

Baked Scallion and Sesame Seed Buns

Baked Scallion and Sesame Seed Buns

This is my Thanksgiving but not so Thanksgiving post.

I've been anti-make-Thanksgiving-food-before-Thanksgiving this year. Last year I went all out because it was my last year in college. I hosted a Friendsgiving and cooked everything by myself and from scratch. There was a roasted chicken (because it's smaller), stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls, cranberry sauce, and a gorgeously cracked pumpkin pie. If that sounds stressful it really wasn't because I was in my element. I had a rough timeline set out, I went grocery shopping a few days before, I called Popo to ask her how to make her stuffing and cranberry sauce, my friends made drinks, and everyone loved the meal. It was a great success with no disasters if I may say so myself.

But, it wasn't the Thanksgiving I really wanted.
