Cornbread Muffins with Bacon and Scallions

Cornbread Muffins with Bacon and Scallions

Lately, I’ve been mesmerized with steam and how it wafts in waves that can change depending on many factors such as temperature or the size and shape of the food item.

Watching steam is one thing but photographing steam and food is tricky. You have to have the right lighting, an object that is fresh from the heat source, and the ability to work quickly. I’ve been fascinated with photographing steam for quite some time some time now, and decided that it will be my food photography theme of this year. Sadly, this means that sweet baked goods that are eaten at room temperature are going to be out of the picture (pun intended!) so I will have to be creative in finding some recipes that make for good food photography steam photos.

Pita Bread with Hummus

Pita Bread with Hummus

It's been a long time since I've made bread

But this began with the hummus.

Hummus from scratch was one of the first things I made as a sophomore in college as I was exploring what it meant to cook for myself. I made it in the winter, similar to this one, as a healthier snack option than the box of Wheat Thins from Costco that my roommate Mackenzie and I went through within days. If memory serves correctly, I tried to put spinach in that hummus but it did not bode well. It was not smooth, it was not homogenized. I had clearly done something wrong but with no clue as to what that was. Maybe it was the canned chickpeas or my food processor but after that experience, I didn't trust my hummus making skills.

Swedish Nuts

Swedish Nuts

Also known as Crack Nuts, Nuts on Crack, Incredibly Sugary and Buttery Nuts or "OhmayGod How Come I Can't Stop Eating These" Nuts.

I am very particular when it comes to nuts. I don't mind them whole and salted as a snack or in a bowl that you pick over at a party. I only like salted peanuts on a plane because that's when they taste the best but will avoid them in say, trail mix and go for the cashews instead.

I definitely do not like them in most cookies, unless they are ground so finely like in these Almond Crescents or macarons that I don't know they are there. And certainly not in cakes, brownies or doughnuts.  And never, ever in ice cream. Rocky Road and I were not friends as a child. Nor pistachio with chunky bits.

Maybe it's a texture thing but I have never been one to enjoy the feeling that nuts leave in your teeth, especially in your back molars.

So of course, it took me many years to like these nuts.

Chocolate Dipped Brown Butter Rice Krispie Treats

Chocolate Dipped Brown Butter Rice Krispie Treats

It's a mouthful of a title but those 7 words just about cover the flavor profile of these rice krispie treats.

It feels like ages ago since I made these. (They were actually Valentine's treats for my hapkido class.) And since then, it's been a blur, literally, because I've had pink eye for the past week and it feels like I've had it forever. It's almost better but I've had to wear my glasses every day now. For someone who has religiously put on her contacts every morning for the past 12 years, this has been a whole new experience in appreciating clarity and eye ware. Also, how to be conscious of contagiousness. There was a lot of, "Don't itch that other eye" and "Go wash your hands now" going on in my head.

So, this week, I'm looking forward to putting my contacts in again and not having to worry about spreading this nasty eye infection. *fingers crossed*

In the meantime, these Rice Krispie Treats are so easy that you can still make them with blurry vision.

Spicy Peach Crumb Doughnuts

Spicy Peach Crumb Doughnuts

If you're thinking, "Seriously Kara, another peach recipe?", I wouldn't blame you.

Yes, another peach recipe. There is the potential for more peach recipes until summer is over and peaches no longer retain their velvet-y texture and distinct peach-y taste. Stone fruit in general is also included in the mix as well (hint hint). Then, we'll move on to pumpkin everything.

I'm kidding, I don't like pumpkin nearly as much as I like peaches.
