Scallion-Ginger Chicken Soup with Fresh Noodles

Scallion-Ginger Chicken Soup with Fresh Noodles

I had a suspicion that when I made fresh pasta/noodles for the first time, I would likely get addicted to the process.

It is incredibly satisfying knowing that all it takes is flour, a liquid like eggs or water, time and a pasta machine to make fresh pasta/noodles from scratch. So here is my encouraging nudge to dust off a pasta machine you may have tucked away in your pantry and bring it out for the sake of trying something new!

I’ve been meaning eyeing the Scallion-Ginger Chicken Soup from Cynthia’s new cookbook, A Common Table, for several months now, and the rainy weather the past few weeks was all I needed to make this comforting soup. I like recipes that are simple, with very few ingredients, but have great flavor, and this soup is that type of recipe. Cynthia’s recipe boils dumplings or pieces of dough in the hot soup. I recommended this recipe to my sister, Kristen, and she said she switched out the dumplings for soup noodles. I knew I would like noodles better, so I decided it was finally time to try using a pasta machine for the first time.

Cranberry Apple Ginger Pie

Cranberry Apple Ginger Pie

Honestly, the pear is only in there because I wanted to use it up.

I made this pie twice, once per request of my coworkers who were hankering for pie and the second time because it was really good and I wanted to share it with Kristen, some friends and now you.

My coworkers and I jokingly came up with the idea of a 'Pie Fund' where non-pie making coworkers would contribute money or ingredients to put in the next pie as incentive for pies to appear on a regular basis. This was kept up for a few rounds until we got more pies and other treats for work purposes. But, maybe after the holidays are over, this will resume. I would not object to having pie all year 'round.

Next week, this will be my Thanksgiving pie. I'm generally the dessert girl when it comes to holidays and special occasions so bringing a pie is usually a must.

Chewy Spiced Ginger Snaps

Chewy Spiced Ginger Snaps

So, December is here.

And just a few months ago, I was reminiscing about fall

But now, Thanksgiving is over, I've spruced up my tiny apartment with some holiday cheer, it is now freezing by California's standards and the neighborhood yards have exploded with Christmas lights of all different colors.

I'll admit, I used to be strictly a no-Christmas-music-before-Thanksgiving kind of gal but since churning out holiday work projects since August, I might have broken that rule just a few times. Some days, when it was still almost 100 degrees outside, I'd need a little something to put my mindset in the holiday season. I'd put my earbuds on, scroll through my various Pandora Holiday stations and choose something. Within seconds swelled the sound of uplifting trumpets and the suave voice of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin. Every so often, I'd slowly remove one earbud just to make sure that this was a silent endeavor.

At about 15 minutes in, I'd turn it off and switch to something else. It just got too weird and felt wrong.

And it still felt a little weird to listen to Christmas music the night of Thanksgiving

I think I'm starting to become a jaded adult.
