Lately, I’ve been mesmerized with steam and how it wafts in waves that can change depending on many factors such as temperature or the size and shape of the food item.

Watching steam is one thing but photographing steam and food is tricky. You have to have the right lighting, an object that is fresh from the heat source, and the ability to work quickly. I’ve been fascinated with photographing steam for quite some time some time now, and decided that it will be my food photography theme of this year. Sadly, this means that sweet baked goods that are eaten at room temperature are going to be out of the picture (pun intended!) so I will have to be creative in finding some recipes that make for good food photography steam photos.

Roasted Corn and Shishito Pepper Pizza

Another summer, another year to roast the heck out of shishito peppers. 

Since my first introduction to these funny little peppers, I can't help but roast pints of them when they are in season. Usually I opt for some variation of this super simple method, and this year is no exception—they are best simply charred with a little bit of sea salt. 

So why not top them on pizza? 1 in 10 of these peppers has a bit of a fire, although for the most recent basket I bought it was more like 1 in 3. As a person who is still working on being comfortable with spicy foods, I'll eat them like chips until I get a particularly spicy one. Luckily, the fire from shishito peppers quickly fades away. This spice lends a similar kick to topping your pizza with crushed red pepper flakes but with more of a fresh pepper taste.

Weekly Wander #12

On the last decently cool weekend of the Central Valley for a long while, I took a half bike ride and half walk to look at the corn field that I pass every day to and from work. 

Last year, this field was full of sunflowers but it makes sense that they rotate every year. It seems like these corn stalks just exploded! It wasn't too long ago that they were tiny seedlings so it's been pretty cool to watch them grow taller and taller. Even a few days later, they are still growing and producing corn. 

Even if it's not this corn, watching these stalks grow reminded me how much I am looking forward to getting my hands on some summer corn! The best deal is going to the farmer's market about 5 minutes before they close and getting ears and ears for super cheap. I'm thinking another corn chowder will be in the making soon. 

Although I came out for the corn, I got an even more amazing surprise with the dragonflies flying around! They were pretty hard to stalk because they fly around really fast and are easily startled but I was happy with these shots. There was another white and black variety but they were more elusive than these ones that stood still just long enough for me to be able to photograph.

The clouds were also amazing that day. And even more cool/surprising was the thunderstorm that happened the next day. It's pretty unusual for it to thunderstorm here in June so it was a pretty awesome treat to briefly return to spring/fall.

Summer Corn Chowder

We've hit the point in summer where I feel a mixture of amazement at how fast it's gone mixed in with a longing for fall and the realization that it will still feel like summer until October.

So, with that, I've made soup. A soup filled with the vegetables of summer, the creaminess of fall and topped with bacon and croutons just because they add a nice flavor and texture. It's filled with summer produce but with an ode of fall to come.
