Lemon Passion Fruit Layer Cake

Lemon Passion Fruit Layer Cake

KBC is now two years old! Well, two years and a month because it's taken me a while to get to this celebratory post.

And we'll also celebrate because I made a cake! And after making this cake, I'm not sure I'm really good at making cakes. But more on that later.

I know last year, I said I was going to do all of these things like be better at blogging, share more and make my site the best it can be. I was ambitious about wanting to increase readership, tracking traffic and religiously posting and liking on Instagram. But lately, I am less likely to check stats and post on Instagram daily. I mean there is the daily check to make sure I had some readership and the leisurely scroll through Instagram but I think I got burned out from focusing on numbers and likes rather than the content and stories themselves. I had to let that go and accept that it was okay to not post on this blog every week and to not be obsessive about scrolling through my entire Instagram feed so I never missed a photo or get annoyed about losing followers. Okay, I will admit, getting below 1,000 again would be annoying. This year, I'm going to try to focus on posting things because I care about and like rather than wondering if this is going to be the next post that boosts my readership.

I have found that things take time and sometimes not doing anything for a while and just letting the cogs and wheels turn is what is needed for both me and this site.

Chocolate Pavlova with Fresh Strawberries

Chocolate Pavlova with Fresh Strawberries

I can't believe in the midst of New YorkEasterKristen's birthday and general life things, I forgot that this little blog has been in existence for one year.

Mainly because I was pretty hesitant for months about starting a food blog. I'll be honest, the word blogger is one that makes me cringe and the word blog is one I associate with this sceneThere really wasn't much hope to begin with except that I love taking photos of the food I make (given that the lighting is decent and all that photography mumbo jumbo). In the end, I seriously thought about it for one month before pondering a name for another three months and finally wrote and posted about cake

So here we are, one year later...

A change + Ceramics

A change + Ceramics

So you've probably noticed that things look a little different around here...

No, you're not going crazy. I made some updates on this little blog because it a) deserves it and b) was not satisfying the designer in me.

So what's new? The same content is all here just rearranged a little. This template includes a banner where I've placed other food photographs I've taken for each different section on the menu bar. I decided to add a sidebar to the right of each page because the last template I had squished all of this important information to the bottom of the blog. You'd only really notice it if you scrolled all the way to the bottom.

Note: If you are reading this on your phone, the sidebar is still at the bottom because of the nature of mobile wireframes.

Here's the rundown:

When photography was my worst nightmare

When photography was my worst nightmare

I used to be terrified of cameras.

Not necessarily camera shy but terrified of using cameras, especially DSLRs. I was intimidated by them; mostly because I didn't know how to use them. There were so many controls and settings and the cameras were big and fragile. Throughout middle school and high school, I was in Yearbook class but I never took a single photo for any of the 6 yearbooks I worked on. I have this thing where I fear trying new techniques because I know it won't turn out perfectly the first time around. Photography was one of them. I thought I wouldn't be good enough or be assigned to a photo shoot and come back with blurry, grainy, dark or overall just bad photos. It also didn't help that I was more introverted back then than I am today. The thought of shooting sports in the gross yellow lighting of a gym plus movement was the worst of the worst. I wanted to avoid being in the center of all the action. So I stuck with page layout and design, a place where I was comfortable sitting at a computer designing layouts that broke all the rules of design. I'm mostly talking about the ones in my middle school yearbooks. Thankfully, my designs have improved greatly in high school and most significantly in college.
